Geography

Geography gives children the opportunity to explore the world around them. It allows them to be curious, to ask questions and develop an interest in our fascinating world. It should spark awe and wonder about the wonders of our planet and its population. Teaching will allow children to develop their knowledge and skills in the four key curriculum areas:

  •  Locational Knowledge
  • Place Knowledge
  • Human and Physical Geography
  • Geographical Skills and Fieldwork

'Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future.' - Michael Palin

At Greenfields, we strive for our children to develop their geographical enquiry and skills. Children are encouraged to ask questions about the world and learning aims to deepen their understanding. Our curriculum begins with children developing knowledge about the environment around them, their local area and building to further afield. Children will gain an understanding of different locations, which lends itself to looking at specific places. Geographical resources are regularly used to support understanding and enhance learning. As knowledge of specific places builds, children will learn  human and physical processes, which allow children to talk about places with more detail and confidence.

'The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divided and bring people together.' - Barack Obama

We strive to develop children's geographical skills and fieldwork in a range of contexts. This allows children to put their learning into practise and apply it to the real world. Children will have the opportunity to make observations, record and present their findings in an age-appropriate way. Fieldwork will often take place within the school grounds and build to our local area. Throughout their time at Greenfields, children will also have the opportunity to complete fieldwork at different locations, such as the coast or a local river. These experiences support children to broaden their experiences and see geography in action.
