Lower Key Stage 2

Scooting

For this block of learning, the children’s focus is on developing their core strength and balance. To do this, the children will do a variety of different drills and then apply these balance and strength skills to scooting.

Take a look at these photos, showing off our balance and core strength skills.

We have started to apply our balance skills to scooting, where we have been focused on gliding. To glide, the children are giving themselves one big push off from the ground and seeing how long they can stay balanced and travelling forwards for.

Once the children mastered gliding, they were given obstacles to negotiate, such as a roundabout and slalom.

Orienteering

In their orienteering lessons, the children let how to set a map. They learnt to do this by looking at key aspects of the land and then locating them on the map to hold it in the correct position.

Once they mastered this, the children navigated their way around cones to collect numbers and letters

The children then went onto using a map to navigate their way around the school to hunt for the orienteering markers.

The children learnt to orienteer in different ways. They practised finding a marker to then return to a central place, to then head off again and also by heading to a starting number and collecting the markers in the most efficient methods.
