Maths

Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, reason, find patterns and solve problems. Most importantly, we strive to create a love of mathematics by providing fun and engaging lessons.

"Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas" - Albert Einstein

At Greenfields, we feel passionately about developing our children's love of mathematics; we encourage them to ask questions and believe that everyone can succeed. We support children to become fluent in their procedural knowledge and develop proficiency in their application, as well as, developing transferable skills with the mentality of “keep up not catch up”. We ensure to provide opportunities for children to find patterns and make generalisations through exploration of number and beyond.  We support our children through their journey by delivering high-quality teaching for every child with well-thought through lessons, high-quality resources and a comfortable environment to take risks and deepen understanding. Throughout their mathematical learning with us, we expose children to a wide range of mathematical language and opportunities to use this within their active participation in discussion and discovery

“Maths is fun, interesting and exciting.” (Year 5 student in Cedar Tree Class)

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including the varied and regular practice of increasingly complex problems over time.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, understanding relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
"Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country" - David Hilbert
