Upper Key Stage 2

Basketball

Throughout this term, the children have been developing their basketball skills.

They developed their skills in the key areas needed for them to have the ability to play the sport well.

The children first focused on their dribbling skills and their throwing and catching skills.

They first revisited how to dribble a basketball, they revised the best techniques and put this to practise in a variety of different drills.

The children then used their knowledge of netball and football, from last year, to develop their throwing and catching skills. They practised chest passes, should passes and overhead throws.

UKS2 then moved onto intercepting the ball and defending interceptions while dribbling. To do this, the children had to focus on attacking the ball and not making contact with the person. This was a challenge as it required a good level of hand-eye-coordination.

The children then moved onto shooting practise. This skill also overlapped with their previous knowledge from netball and they used similar skills in order to be successful. The children also quickly discovered that they could use the backboard to their advantage when shooting.

Finally, the children then moved onto an attacking and defending drill which combined all the previous skills they have learnt. In order to be successful, the children had to work as a team and create space through dribbling and passing and then take an accurate shot. The defenders had to try to work as a team to prevent this success.

Orienteering

In their orienteering lessons, the children let how to set a map. They learnt to do this by looking at key aspects of the land and then locating them on the map to hold it in the correct position.

Once they mastered this, the children navigated their way around cones to collect numbers and letters.

The children then went onto using a map to navigate their way around the school to hunt for the orienteering markers.

The children learnt to orienteer in different ways. They practised finding a marker to then return to a central place, to then head off again and also by heading to a starting number and collecting the markers in the most efficient methods.
