Term 6

Julia Donaldson

This term we are focusing on Julia Donaldson. We will be focusing on 3 main stories, ‘The scarecrows wedding’, ‘The singing mermaid’ and ‘Cave baby’. All of our learning will be based around Julia Donaldson stories.

We started by looking at lots of Julia Donaldson stories. We looked for the ones we recognised, characters we knew and if we could retell any.

We started to learn about ‘The Scarecrows Wedding’ we looked at the front cover and made predictions of what might happen in the story.

We wrote our own wedding lists, just like Harry and Betty did. Look at our brilliant writing.

We looked at each of the different scarecrows from the story. We wrote what we knew about them, what they looked like and what their personalities were like.

We designed our own wedding invitations.

Look how well we did...

We made our very own Harry the scarecrow.

Growing

This term we are learning all about growing. We will be looking at what grows, what plants need to grow, what we need to grow, life cycles and baby animals. We will be doing lots of planting, so look forward to beans and sunflowers coming home.

We explored plants.

We drew and labelled all the things that we could think of that grow.

We focussed on the ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ story. We looked at parts of the story and wrote what the character may be saying.

We then focussed on the hungry caterpillar. After reading the story, we acted out being the very hungry caterpillar.

Meet the new members of our Cherry and Apple family. Our very own Hungry Caterpillars.

The children worked as a team to create our own Hungry Caterpillar for our display board.

We created Butterfly life cycles.

We had a mobile farm visit school. Look at all the lovely animals we got to see and stroke.

We have been learning about life cycles, focussing on Butterflies, Frogs, Plants,Chickens and Bee’s

We ordered the cycle in teams and then drew and labelled our way. We did a great job.

Our caterpillars are growing well.

The beans the children planted are growing well. The children love to watch the changes.

We role played in some pretend frogspawn, pretending we were tadpoles and then frogs.

To finish our week on three Frog life cycle we described a range of frogs. Look at some of our amazing writing.

We explored eggs in learning time, looking at the different ways egg can look.

We thought about how the ugly duckling would be feeling in different parts of the story.

Today we were able to crack eggs and feel the different textures.

We retold the ‘Ugly Duckling’ story using a small world scene.

Keeping to our egg theme, we had scrambled egg on toast for snack time. The children did a great job at cooking it and even better job at eating it.

We learnt about what happens inside the egg and ordered the pictures.

We acted out the hungry caterpillar story and then moved in a range of ways to different music. We listened to the music and moved in a way that it made us feel

We explored weight, we started by just exploring different scales and how they worked.

We then weighed different items, recorded their weight and then ordered them by there weight.

Our Butterflies hatched from their cocoons. The children have been fascinated to see what they look like,

Some fantastic phonics application. Look at our amazing writing.

We released our butterflies.

SPACE

We are learning all about space this term. We will focus on where space is, what is in space and learn about all the different planets. We will use stories to help with our learning. Books such as ‘The way back home’, ‘whatever next’ and ‘Aliens love underpants’ will add to our child initiated learning. Our focus in Maths is shape and patterns. We can’t wait to show you what we get up to.

We started off by sorting space pictures. We identified what were items from space and what wasn’t. We spoke a lot to work out what we already knew about space.

We started looking at shapes today. Looking at 2D shapes first.

We read ‘The way back home’

We then ordered the story, trying to remember all of the sections.

We wrote about how the little boy would feel when he was stuck on the moon on his own. Look at our amazing writing.

We have been really busy during our space themed child initial time. Look at our fantastic learning.

The children have been enjoying the mud kitchen.

We sorted between 2D and 3D shapes. We then picked real items to sort into 2D or 3D and match them with their 3D shape.

We then used nets to create 3D shapes.

Our story this week is ‘Whatever next’. We read the book and then used the props to role play the play. We did a brilliant job.

We continued our shape learning with trying to build our own 3D shapes. The children were brilliant at exploring the different resources. It was really tricky, but they showed great resilience. They have a fantastic knowledge of the 3D shape names and their features.

We made a rocket in learning time. We had so much fun and so much learning in it over the week. We made seat belts, control panels, we wrote about what we found when we landed and where we wanted to fly too.

We introduced the story ‘Aliens love underpants’. We sequenced the story and then used puppets to act out what we could remember, We did a great job.

Alien and space themed learning in learning time.

We focussed on ‘Aliens love underpants save the world’ We had pictures from the story and post it notes. We had to write about what we could see in the pictures. We then had speech bubbles and wrote what we thought the Aliens were saying or thinking.

‘ALIENS LOVE UNDERPANTS’ PANT PARTY DAY!

We had a great day with lots of Pant themed learning.

Miss Gibson visited us and we thought about the NSPCC Talk Pants campaign.

Our next focus is all of the Planets. We looked at the planet song, identifying all the facts it told us. We then used these facts to order the planets, draw them, paint them and find out new facts. Look at our amazing learning.

We focussed on a range of different patterns. Some repeating, some patterns in the environment

ASTRODOME VISIT!! We were very lucky and had an astrodome company visit us today. We got to look at stars, planets and learnt lots of information.

We then focussed on Patterns we see in our Environment. We used a range of different patterns to create a pattern flower or Mother’s Day cards.
