MFL (Spanish)

At Greenfields in years 3–6, children engage weekly in learning Spanish. Children explore a diverse range of Spanish topics that allow them to explore a variety of ways to enhance their language learning. They will learn the basic skills of the language and apply these to a range of topics.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • They can write at varying lengths, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” – Nelson Mandela

As a school, we follow the Language Angels scheme of learning, which provides a fun, structured, and progressive approach to Spanish. Lessons build gradually from listening and speaking skills to developing reading and writing in Spanish. Each unit is rich in interactive activities that make language learning engaging and meaningful.

At Greenfields, our pupils learn to:

  • Listen to and understand spoken Spanish, joining in and responding appropriately.
  • Take part in conversations, asking and answering questions, and expressing simple opinions.
  • Explore the sounds and patterns of Spanish in a variety of ways.
  • Speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary and basic language structures.
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation.
  • Read and understand words, phrases, and short passages.
  • Write simple phrases and sentences to express their own ideas.
  • Learn to describe people, places, and actions both orally and in writing.
  • Begin to understand key grammar, including gender, verb forms, and sentence structure.
  • Appreciate Spanish culture and enjoy communicating in another language.
