Evolution and Inheritance

Evolution and Inheritance - Science UKS2 Cycle B

During our Science topic, we will be exploring evolution and inheritance, learning how living things have changed over time and how characteristics are passed from parents to offspring. We will investigate how fossils provide evidence of life from millions of years ago and help us understand how species have adapted to survive in different environments. We will also learn about natural selection and how some adaptations can be beneficial, while others may not. Through our learning, we will develop a deeper understanding of how plants and animals evolve and the role inheritance and variation play in this process.

World War 2

WW2 - History UKS2 Cycle B

During our History topic, we will be exploring World War II and its impact on Britain and the wider world. We will learn about key events such as the outbreak of war, the role of the Allies and Axis powers, and how Britain defended itself during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. We will also explore how people’s lives were affected through rationing, evacuation, and propaganda. To deepen our understanding, we will visit Dover Castle, where we will explore its important role in defending Britain and link our learning to a real historical site.

Culture

Diversity and Acceptance – PSHE UKS2 Cycle B

During PSHE, we looked at diversity and acceptance, exploring what it means to be part of a community and how people’s differences should be valued and respected. We took part in thoughtful discussions about topics such as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination, and considered how these can impact individuals and groups. We worked to create a safe and supportive environment where everyone felt able to share their ideas, ask questions, and respectfully challenge different viewpoints. Through this, we developed a deeper understanding of how to treat others with kindness and fairness, and how we can play a role in promoting inclusion and challenging negative attitudes in the world around us.

Classification

Classification - Science UKS2 Cycle B

This term in Science, we will be exploring classification and how it helps us understand and organise living things. We will learn what classification is, how it is used, and why it is important. Building on this, we will investigate what an organism is and the features that different groups of organisms may have, using this knowledge to support our understanding. We will also create our own classification keys to help distinguish between bacteria, viruses, and fungi, developing our skills in identifying and grouping organisms.

Electricity

Electrical Systems - DT UKS2 Cycle B

During this DT Learning Experience, we will be using our knowledge of electrical systems and product design to design and create our own electrical games. We will begin by conducting market research to understand existing products and identify what makes them successful, before developing our own ideas. As we create our games, we will think carefully about how electrical components work together and how to make our designs both fun and functional. Throughout the process, we will also critically evaluate our ideas and final products to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Orienteering

Orienteering and Map Work - Geography UKS2 Cycle B

For this Learning Experience, we will focus on developing our orienteering skills as we learn to navigate around different areas. We will explore how to use maps effectively, including understanding symbols and keys, and how to read them accurately. We will also learn how to use compasses to support our navigation and build confidence in finding our way. To bring our learning to life, we will visit Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest, where we will complete a course and apply all of the knowledge and skills we have developed.

World Book Day

Leeds Castle Trip

Web Design

Web Design - Computing UKS2 Cycle B

During Computing, we will be developing our skills as digital creators by designing and building our own websites. We will start by planning our layout and content, then use Keynote to create interactive pages with linked buttons, images, and audio features.

Electricity

Electricity - Sience UKS2 Cycle B

During Science, we will be exploring the exciting world of electricity. We will learn about complete and incomplete circuits, investigate how to build the most effective circuit through a hands-on experiment, and enjoy a trip to the London Science Museum.

Music - Livin' On a Prayer

Livin' On A Prayer - KO - Music

During this music unit, we listened to and evaluated 'Livin’ On a Prayer' and learnt to sing the song confidently as a class. We examined the notes and musical patterns used in the piece and used glockenspiels both to create our own short melodies and to play parts of 'Livin’ On a Prayer'. This helped us boost our confidence and develop our performance skills throughout the unit.

Set Design

Set Design - KO - Art

In this Learning Experience, we explored how to design and build small-scale film sets. To gather inspiration, our class visited the Harry Potter Studios, where we observed professional set design up close. We experimented with a variety of techniques to create realistic details in our own models and ensured our designs were built to an accurate scale.

Drugs and Alcohol

Drugs and Alcohol - KO - PSHE

During this Learning Experience, we explored facts about legal and illegal harmful substances and their associated risks, including smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug use. We also invited a paramedic to speak to the children about the dangers of smoking, alcohol, and drug use.

The Human Body

The Human Body - KO - Science

This term in science, we have been learning all about the human body. We focused on the circulatory system and examined how blood circulates throughout our body and is utilised by our muscles. We dissected a lamb's heart to understand its structure as well. Next, we investigated how diet, drugs, alcohol, and exercise affect our bodies.

In Learning Experience this term, we will be learning about the ancient Maya in history, Natural Disasters in geography, HTML in computing and Money in PSHE. In English, we will be reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and will be focusing on Writing to Inform. In maths, we will be covering place value, addition and subtraction. PE this term will be swimming and rugby. Check our class page to keep up-to-date with what we are covering.

Money

During this Learning Experience, we will explore the fundamentals of money, including different forms such as cash, credit, and debit cards, and the origins of money. We will learn how people will earn income through various jobs and how salaries can vary and increase over time. Additionally, we will discuss expenses, budgeting, and the importance of making smart financial choices, while understanding potential risks like debt and overspending.

HTML

During this Learning Experience, we will create our own HTML code to design and build websites about natural disasters. We will start by learning the basics of HTML structure, including how to use tags to create headings, paragraphs, and images. We will then explore how to add links, organise content, and make our pages visually appealing. Throughout the Learning Experience, we will have time to experiment with our designs and showcase what we have learned about natural disasters in a creative and interactive way.

Just a snippet of our HTML work!

Natural Disasters

During this Learning Experience, we will be learning about natural disasters. We will begin by looking at the Earth's layers and tectonic plates. We will explore how shifts within the tectonic plates cause earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes. We will then have time through the Learning Experience to ask questions and discover more about the specific areas of natural disasters that Silver Birch Trees children find interesting and want to find out more about.

We are connecting the pieces together along the tectonic plate lines to show how movements in the Earth's surface can cause natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes.

Maya

During this Learning Experience, we will be learning about the Mayan empire. We will begin by looking at who the Maya were and where they lived. We will be comparing the Maya timeline with events from British history. We will explore how they settled, what they believed, how they lived and how they were governed. Finally, we will investigate the decline of Maya cities. At the end of the Learning Experience, we will invite parents in to experience some of our learning.
