Design Technology is an inspiring and practical subject that encourages children to use their creativity and imagination to solve real-world problems. Through the process of designing and making products, pupils learn to think critically and work resourcefully.

At Greenfields, we aim to inspire and equip children with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing, technology-driven world. Through Design Technology, pupils combine practical skills with critical thinking to design and create products that respond to real-life needs and challenges.

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Design is knowing which ones to keep." – Scott Adams

We encourage children to bring their ideas to life through imaginative design, thoughtful problem-solving, and a willingness to take risks in order to improve and refine their work. Our goal is to develop confident, innovative problem-solvers who can apply their technical knowledge and creativity with purpose.

Every child is given the opportunity to design, make, and evaluate both their own creations and those of others—building strong foundations for independent thinking, resilience, and lifelong learning.

"Recognising the need is the primary condition for design." – Charles Eames

The national curriculum in DT outlines that all pupils should:

  • "Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world."
  • "Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users."
  • "Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others."
  • "Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook."

"Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future." – Robert L. Peters
