Term 1

My Daddies

For our last book of Term 1, we read My Daddies. A beautiful book about a girls adventures when she shares books and stories with her Daddies. It also explores how families may look different from our own, yet still full of love. As part of our adult directed activites we shared photos of our families, an activity which all the children really enjoyed and prompted lots of conversaions about who they were looking at and who they live with. We also invitied parents in to make sandwiches with their children and enjoy them whilst sharing a story together.

In White Rose Maths we used a singing sack to hear and say numbers, using props from songs to help the children guess what song it might be.

In PE the children were superheros! They had a great time showing us how strong, fast, invisable and stretchy they were. We used the paprachute to make waves with our super powers and then explored our colour knowledge.

During child initiated the children explored the dressing up, mark making on different surfaces, using autum leaves in the playdough and chopping and making soup in the mud kitchen.

Percy The Park Keeper

Classic Treasury signed by the author ...

This week we have been covering the adventures of Percy the Park Keeper and his animal friends. The children have learnt about various adventures and have really enjoyed looking at the illustrations in the books. We went on an adventure to the park with our friends from Plums and Pear Tree class, which was really lovely and all the children walked and behaved beautifully. We combined our PE lesson with the park trip, pretending the climbing frames were castles and testing ourselves physically with climbing, jumping and spinning.

In maths we explored number names. The children used the pegs and blocks to count and talk about the names of the numbers they counted.

During our child-initiated learning, Peaches were very busy. They made a beautiful autumn collage with Mrs M, used the rollers and cutters to make biscuits with the playdough, built a new obstacle course in the garden, which was very popular, made chip bark pies in the mud kitchen and demonstrated great sharing when using the giant marble run!

Barbara Throws a Wobbler - Week 2

For the second week of our coverage of Barbara throws a Wobbler, the children enjoyed revisiting the story, painting their own rock wobbler, meeting Barbara's friend Jeffery, a story by the same author, who gets the jitters in his tummy, and we drew our own jitters and had great fun with the musical instruments, playing happy tunes.

In PE this week we were mythical creatures. Moving our bodies pretending to be dragons, unicorns and under sea creatures. We also had bean bag fairies to look after and see if we could have them land on different parts of our bodies.

In maths this week, we looked at repeats, so we read the story of the Little Red Hen and then made some yummy cheese scones, which we shared with our friends for snack.

In child-initiated time, the children explored nature, using it in their learning, by painting or collaging, making playdough cakes in the mud kitchen and using cars and ramps. We have had some wonderful large-scale art and the children really embraced developing their independence and chopping up their own fruit for snack time.

Barbara Throws a Wobbler

During our first week of covering Barbara Throws a Wobbler, the children have been introduced to Barbara, who is struggling with controlling her emotions and ends up throwing a huge wobbler. She soon learns how to deal with this big emotion. The children enjoyed listening to the story and talking about the pictures. The park scene was very popular and led to conversations around them feeling happy at the park. We looked at different emotions and how these may look on our faces, using mirrors. The children also had a great time dancing to 'If you are happy, and you know it' and other songs that made us all feel happy!

In maths this week we have looked at space, shape and measure, focusing on exploring and building with shapes and objects. The children completed puzzles, completed a threading activity, rescued small animals from a web and built towers with various blocks.

For PE this week we focused on monsters. We pretended to be various sized monsters, moving our bodies to big or small, tall or wide or jumping monsters.

During child-initiated learning times, Peach Tree class has been very busy. Still making the most of the dry weather, they have been making tea and coffee in the outdoor kitchen, testing their physical skills on the obstacle course and making potions in the water areas.  Inside, there has been lots of mark making, balancing and exploring the changes of the season to autumn.

Meg and Mog

The children really enjoyed this week's story of Meg and Mog. After sharing the story, we collected sticks to make into magic wands, then painted them. The children made their own Mogs from black and white strips of paper and yellow eyes.

For maths this week the children looked at collections and whether there was more than, the same or fewer than. We used all sorts of items to count from mini beasts to blocks as well as dots on a dice.

This week's PE was full of witches and wizards! We were working on finding spaces and being aware of others, so the children role played by flying on their broomsticks and stopping in a space of their own. We made a spell and threw bean bags into a cauldron.

During child-initiated time, the children had a chance to use the large play equipment in the shared area, created magic spells with the play dough and practised their jumping.

Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs Children s Book

This week we learnt all about the Three Little Pigs. As well as sharing the story, the children created a pig picture, using pink paints, sticking on ears, eyes and snouts; pretended to be the big bad wolf and took part in a blow painting activity.

In Maths we looked at numbers 1,2 and 3. As well having groups of 3's in the environment, the children used their fingers to represent these numbers, sang number songs and made links to our book of the week by counting the pigs on each page.

We had such a great time in our first PE lesson. The children went up to the hall and moved around the hall as pirates, walked the plank to practice balance and jumped through the sea of hoops!

During our learning time, the children have continued to explore all the areas of the nursery.  They have been busy in the outdoor mud kitchen, baking cakes, painting, investigating how the cars move along ramps and digging for bugs. We played musical instruments and used the singing stones to choose our songs.

Getting to know you

A very warm welcome to all our children and families. We have had a lovely week getting to know each other and the children have been busy exploring the different environments.

We have shared stories, sung songs, made marks, explored the outside area and begun to make friends.
