Lower Key Stage 2

Across term 1 and 2, LKS2 have been going swimming, building on their teamwork skills and developing balance, strength and movement skills through gymnastics.

At the start of every lesson, the children completed a warm up and stretches to ensure their muscles are warm and ready for activity. The children would play the Bean Game or the Pirate Game or the Matt Game if they were doing gymnastics.

Gymnastics

First, we learnt some positions which will support our flexibility which will support us in all areas of gymnastics.

While always recapping the flexibility positions, we also moved onto holding certain positions which will support our strength - another key area which will help with all areas of gymnastics.

After we masted the strength and flexibility positions, we moved onto jumping. We looked at two footed springs and single footed hops and combining these in routines. We also looked a bunny bounces too.

Finally, we used all the skills we have learnt and used these to help us complete preparatory cartwheels over benches.

Team Sports

Throughout learning about team sports, the children completed some team building exercises and played benchball. We decided to play benchball as it really supports the children working as a team in order to be successful.

We started off playing silent benchball, through this, the children learnt the importance of communication when playing a team sport. We managed to come up with some very inventive ways of getting our team mates attention, but ultimately, we found that communication was key.

After playing silent benchball, the children played the game while being allowed to communicate. We focused on ensuring that our communication was effective and positive.

Some of the children found the teamwork aspect of the game challenging at times, but after practise, soon were able to decide how best to play the game and where certain players played for the good of the team.
